About PopKissKiss

renee claireMy name’s Renee Claire, and PopKissKiss is my ongoing love letter to Asian pop culture. I also run She’s A Betty, a blog about D.I.Y. lifestyle; the two blogs are about to be merged, horror movie-style, into a blog called PopBetty.

In the real world, I’m a freelance writer & editor based in Atlanta. I spent about 3.5 years as a bookseller & manager at Borders (R.I.P.), and attended UGA as a Foundation Fellow (I majored in poetry! Oh, to be that young and naive again…).

I started reading manga & watching anime in the mid-1990s, then dropped both for ten years, frustrated with limited offerings, high prices, and limited distribution. When I picked up manga again ten years later, things had changed tremendously: now there were scanlations, Amazon, manga blogs, and giant manga selections at every bookstore in town.

To figure out where to start, I talked comics with a bookstore coworker (who was also a talented manga-inspired comics artist). She pointed me to several manga series, then asked, “Have you watched any [Asian] dramas?”  She recommended Hana Yori Dango, Nobuta wo Produce, and Coffee Prince to start.

Drama lovers know what happened next. I watched all her recommended dramas, then watched dozens more, all in a matter of months. I also read copious amounts of manga, and started following most of the prominent manga bloggers. Soon, I was the one recommending drama & manga–to her, to everyone. Eventually, I ran out of people to recommend things to. So I started this blog.
